Abstract
It is said that 80% of the production cost of a product is determined in the design stage. Considering the total costs of design and manufacturing in the product life cycle, it is therefore extremely important to design high quality from the beginning. At TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TOYOTA), body design quality is enhanced by performing design review (DR) using XVL. This chapter discusses the actual uses of 3D data in DR as described by Mr. Junichi Harada, general manager of the body and electronic parts design division at the Lexus Center. Mr. Harada says he is concerned about depending too much on 3D, so he is careful about how he uses it. DR is one area where he has found clear benefits from using 3D.
