Abstract
This chapter presents how to personalize a treatment plan for an adult with ADHD. Treatment goals should be personalized, and appropriate treatment approaches chosen. The chapter reviews: how to prioritize core ADHD versus other self-regulatory challenges; the major dimensions of distress that clinical care should address; what medication is and is not likely to impact; factors that can be changed to improve cognitive performance and ability to engage; how to recognize when non-medication supports are indicated; principles for mitigating the effects of organizational challenges or difficulty establishing habits; options for optimizing environmental accommodation at school, work, or home; and the importance of adapting treatment goals and plans over time.
