Abstract

Transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract (UUT-TCC) accounts for 5–10 % of all urothelial cancers. The diagnosis of UUT-TCC involves the use of radiological imaging, urinary cytology, and ureteroscopy with biopsies. The management of patients with UUT-TCC is dependent on patient co-morbidity and tumor factors. For localized disease, the gold standard is a radical nephroureterectomy but conservative management with ureteroscopic tumor ablation is indicated in selected patient groups. Conservative management requires close follow-up due to the high risk of tumor recurrence.
