Chronic Liver Failure

Part of the book series: Clinical Gastroenterology ((CG))

Abstract

One of the most appealing therapeutic approaches for treating any organ failure is the possibility to provide a temporary artificial support of its function. In some cases (for example kidney failure) dialysis procedures are widely accepted and used, while in others (for example cardiac failure) artificial devices remain largely investigational. In this context, the concept of artificial liver support (ALS) has gained importance in the past decades.
