Abstract

Chronic liver failure can have profound effects on the lungs. Hepatic dysfunction affects the process of breathing (when awake or during sleep), impairs lung mechanics, and may cause dramatic changes in pulmonary circulation. These pulmonary alterations commonly result in symptoms of fatigue (possibly related to sleep-related breathing abnormalities) and dyspnea which can significantly affect the quality of life in addition to direct consequences of chronic liver failure.
