Abstract

Antroduodenal manometry (ADM) provides a useful clinical tool for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of foregut motor function. Although a test still performed in highly specialized GI motility centers requiring expertise in interpretation, ADM has provided an improved understanding of normal physiology of the foregut and of disorders that arise from disruption neuromuscular function in this region. It has allowed the recognition of normal patterns of motility including the variation in phasic contractile activity that occurs during fasting and postprandially. Utilizing visual examples the chapter describes these normal patterns as well as those that indicate disorder both organic and functional. Technical and practical methodological aspects related to performing ADM tests on pediatric patients are discussed including equipment, protocols, indications, limitations, and analysis. It is likely that technological advances including the use of high resolution will broaden the applicability of ADM in the clinical evaluation of enteric neuromuscular disorders.
