Abstract

Gastroparesis is a common problem in preterm infants and adolescents and an infrequent condition in toddlers and school age children. Etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of gastroparesis differ in children compared to adults. Immaturity of the enteric nervous system is responsible for most cases of delayed gastric emptying in newborns and viral infections are the most common cause of gastroparesis in adolescents. While scintigraphy remains the gold standard for the diagnosis of gastroparesis in pediatrics, less invasive technologies, including ultrasonography and breath testing have been developed and validated to measure gastric emptying in children. Nutritional management, including the use of enteral feedings, is of paramount importance in pediatric gastroparesis. Scarce data is available in children to support the benefit of prokinetics, intrapyloric botulin toxin injection, or gastric pacemaker.
