Abstract
Over the past decade, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) has emerged as one of the most common causes of dysphagia and food impaction in adults. This chronic condition is characterized by increased esophageal eosinophils in the setting of esophageal symptoms. While EoE may occur in conjunction with eosinophilic gastroenteritis, the rising field is related to the subset with isolated esophageal eosinophilia. Development of EoE in adults is likely due to a multitude of factors, including esophageal acid exposure, food and environmental allergens, and genetic predisposition. While investigation into each of these areas is actively being studied and discussed in further detail elsewhere in this book, this chapter will highlight the clinical presentation of EoE in adults.
