Key Points

The chapter reviews the literature pertaining to the role of obesity in modulating immune function. Obesity is found in both genetic and diet-induced obese animal models as well as in obese humans to impair immune response; both innate and acquired immune functions are affected. The immune dysfunction during obesity increases host susceptibility to infections and to chronic inflammatory diseases.
