Abstract
This chapter is long on strategy and short on science. It may sound calculating to you, but that is not my intention. I assume that you love science, research, and the creation of new knowledge. However, you need funding to pursue these interests. A solid knowledge of the strategies that can improve your chances of obtaining funding is essential. In this chapter, I discuss the following topics: (1) identifying a fundable topic; (2) choosing the right funding agency and committee; (3) establishing a strong research team; (4) putting together a realistic budget; and (5) employing strategies that will improve your chances of obtaining funding. Good grantsmanship is a critical skill that you need to develop early in your career.
Donors don’t give to institutions. They invest in ideas and people in whom they believe.
