Abstract
Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is an excellent management option for small, superficial renal masses. With experience, larger and deeper tumors can be addressed as well. Intermediate-term follow-up (3- and 5-year) suggests cancer control similar to that of open surgery. The benefit of laparoscopy over open surgery is a briefer and less intense convalescence. The disadvantage of laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, at least with current techniques, is a complication rate that is somewhat greater than for open surgery. Careful preoperative assessment and planning is of utmost importance. A successful procedure can be performed through a variety of approaches (transperitoneal, retroperitoneal, and hand-assisted), with or without renal hilar clamping, and using any of a number of methods for tumor bed management (coagulation instruments, hemostatic products, and suturing), with the optimal selection of technique determined by the tumor characteristics.
