The NIAID commitment to advancing HIV/AIDS research in international settings to prevent, treat, and eventually eradicate this disease has been steadily increasing, reflecting the global impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic as well as the critical need for cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. NIAID has supported collaborative international research on HIV/AIDS in more than 40 countries. Many of these projects take place in regions of the world with limited resources and where more than 95% of new HIV infections occur.
