Abstract

Sjögren syndrome (SS) is a slowly progressive autoimmune disease that affects mainly exocrine glands and extraglandular epithelial tissues (autoimmune epithelitis). It may present alone (primary SS) or in association with another autoimmune disease (mainly systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis – secondary SS). Criteria have been proposed for the correct classification of patients and are based on the main diagnostic tools for SS diagnosis. Herein, after a brief description of SS pathophysiology, these criteria are extensively discussed.
