Key Points

Although preventable in many cases, DKA and HHS remain among the most morbid of the acute sequelae of diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents. Recent innovations reduce cost and resource utilization during stabilization, transport, and definitive care of pediatric patients with DKA. The two-bag approach for initial resuscitation and stabilization of DKA has become the standard of care for pediatric DKA.
