Abstract
Bladder exstrophy is a rare but very severe congenital defect that affects the lower urinary tract, genitalia, abdominal wall, and pelvis. Modern advances in the medical, surgical, and nursing care of exstrophy patients have revolutionized our ability to anatomically correct this defect and provide these children with an excellent quality of life. The authors review the fundamental aspects of the diagnosis and management of bladder exstrophy with a focus on the role of the primary care physician from prenatal diagnosis to ongoing surveillance of surgical complications and psychological welfare.
