Abstract
Diabetes educators are expected to educate patients in many aspects of self-care. Often blood glucose records are the end results of self-care behavior, which is multi-factorial. When evaluating blood glucose records, multiple aspects of patient behaviors are essential for assessing patterns and explanations of abnormal glucose results. Too often providers focus on just one aspect, typically medication dose, instead of considering all the other factors that affect the glucose level. Asking questions about what, how, and when the patient is eating, exercising, or taking their medications may lead the diabetes educator to discover the missing link in self-care. Using a systematic approach to evaluate your patient’s blood glucose records is critical in determining the appropriate therapeutic options for diabetes care.
