This chapter introduces the procedure, assessment, application, limitations, and technical considerations of the popular focal brain ischemia model in mice, the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) suture model. Preparation of the suture, surgical procedures, examination of neurological function, and infarct volume assessment are described in detail.
