Abstract

Although a very routine procedure, transrectal ultrasound biopsy lacks accepted guidelines for technique and patient preparation. This chapter explains the preparation protocol at the University of Miami, including the administration of prophylactic antibiotics, the lack of necessity for the use of enemas, and the need for obtaining a detailed consent describing the procedure and possible complications. All patients undergoing transrectal ultrasound biopsy receive periprostatic lidocaine injection to minimize discomfort during the procedure.
