Endoscopic Diagnosis and Management of Cholangiocarcinoma

Abstract

Cholangiocarcinoma is rare with an increasing incidence with age. There are a variety of diagnostic studies available to evaluate the presence and extent of cholangiocarcinoma. Unfortunately, the majority of symptomatic patients present with advanced disease and are not candidates for curative resection. Palliation in the majority of cases consists of endoscopic decompression of the biliary tract to decrease the morbidity of jaundice, which includes pruritus, impaired hepatic and renal function, and associated coagulopathy. More recently, complementary palliative modalities such as photo-dynamic therapy (PDT) and brachytherapy have emerged.
