Abstract

Subdermal contraceptive implants offer women long-acting, controlled release of progestins. Over the past 20 years, they have been approved in more than 60 countries and used by more than 11 million women worldwide. Their high efficacy along with ease of use make them a good contraceptive option for women who require progestin-only methods because they should not use estrogen, teens who find adherence to a contraceptive regime difficult, as well as healthy adult women who desire long-term protection (1). NorplantĀ®, no longer marketed in the United States, garnered 1 million American users but was difficult to insert and remove (2, 3). Now, a highly effective and long-lasting singlerod etonogestrel subdermal implant (ImplanonĀ®) will make implant contraception available again in the United States.
