Summary

Complications of open and transurethral prostate surgery are the most common cause of iatrogenic posterior urethral strictures. Although the number of transurethral resections of the prostate (TURPs) performed in the United States has decreased dramatically, surgery for prostate cancer has proportionately increased in frequency such that Urologists will continue to treat many strictures of the bladder neck, prostatic fossa, and vesicourethral anastomosis. Individualized therapy is required based on etiology, local tissue factors, and incontinence risk. This chapter reviews the epidemiology, mechanisms, and optimal treatment of acquired postprostatectomy strictures of the posterior urethra and bladder neck.
