Abstract

This chapter reviews knowledge regarding the management of bipolar illness during pregnancy and in the postpartum (lactation) period. The natural course of bipolar illness during pregnancy and postpartum is discussed. Additionally, the chapter reviews information on the effects of medication exposure in utero and during lactation on the fetus and infant. General guidelines about treating bipolar disorder are given.
