Abstract
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) was fatal prior to the discovery of insulin in 1921. Insulin injections saved the lives of patients with T1D with a dramatic improvement in the symptoms of hyperglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis (1). Vascular and neuropathic complications of T1D became apparent by the 1950s (2).
