Abstract
Since the end of the Middle Ages and the demise of the Galenic model of human biology and illness, a reductionist, mechanistic, evidence-based paradigm has prevailed. During the several centuries since this transformation in our worldview, there has been a complete revision in our concepts of how to conceptualize health and manage human disorders. Galileo’s pronouncement, “Measure all that is measurable, and make those things measurable which have hitherto not been measured” has found applications unimaginable by Galileo himself (1). The contents of this book are an extension of this concept, as the authors have quantified their current recommendations about medical care for a well-defined group of patients. We expect that these recommendations will serve as the starting points for the generation of evidence concerning their actual value.
