Abstract

In the United Kingdom, in 2001, the National Breast Implant Registry registered 13,402 women who underwent breast implant surgery involving 23,910 breast implants. Registration forms are available in all units where breast implants are carried out. They are filled in for insertion, replacement, and removal procedures. After the form is completed it is forwarded to the Registry. The process is voluntary and there is thought to be only 70% compliance with the Registry. Thus, many procedures are not registered. Of the 13,402 women registered in 2001, 11,096 underwent primary procedures and 2306 underwent replacement procedures. The most common reason for primary surgery was cosmetic augmentation (8569 or 77%), followed by reconstruction after mastectomy for cancer (1765 or 16%), congenital or developmental abnormalities (601 or 5%), reconstruction after mastectomy for benign disease or prophylactic mastectomy (63 or 0.6%), and other (96 or 0.9%).
