Abstract

Sarcoidosis is a disease characterized by granulomatous inflammation in organs and tissues, which is believed to develop in genetically predisposed individuals following exposure to a triggering antigen. Although the etiology of sarcoidosis remains unproven, recent molecular investigations suggest that an immune response against mycobacterial and propionibacterial antigens may play a role in pathogensis. The immune response of sarcoidosis is characterized by a highly polarized Th1 cytokine profile elaborated by lymphocytes and macrophages within granulomas. Elucidation of the specific cytokine mediators of inflammation has led to better markers of disease activity as well as novel targets for new therapies.
