Diabetes in the Elderly

Endocrinology of Aging

Part of the book series: Contemporary Endocrinology ((COE,volume 20))

Abstract

In the past few years, a number of epidemiologic studies have evaluated the incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the aged. Although these studies have used differing diagnostic criteria, they have consistently found an increased prevalence of diabetes in the elderly. The most recent data comes from the Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANES) III (1; Fig. 1). The prevalence of diabetes in patients over the age of 75 yr in the United States is approx 20%, and at least half of older people are unaware they have the disease (2). Although the prevalence is approx 20% in older Caucasians, it is much higher in Blacks, Hispanics, Native Indians, Micronesians, Scandinavians, Japanese, and other ethnic groups. Clearly, we are facing an epidemic of type 2 diabetes in the elderly in the next century.
