Abstract

Treatment of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has improved owing to better management of severe manifestations such as renal failure, central nervous system disease, infection, and pulmonary hemorrhage. In addition, improved outcomes are the result of more judicious use of antiinflammatory drugs, addition of antimalarials, advances in surgical repair and replacement of joints damaged by osteonecrosis, and more appropriate use of corticosteroids and other drugs, such as cyclophosphamide and cyclosporine. Unfortunately, many of these therapies are associated with adverse effects that can be as difficult to manage as the disease itself. New ways to treat SLE patients are needed. This chapter explores the potential use of unsaturated fatty acids for treatment of SLE.
