Abstract

For the patient who has pre-existing type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus or the patient with new-onset of diabetes during glucocorticoid therapy (“steroid diabetes”), glucocorticoid therapy of nonendocrine disease poses dilemmas. Glucocorticoid therapy exacerbates hyperglycemia, and tapering of a glucocorticoid dose without adjustment of diabetes therapy may result in severe hypoglycemia.
