Abstract

Obesity increases the risk of morbidity and mortality and the magnitude of risk for each can only be measured through population studies. By morbidity is meant the onset and severity of disease associated with obesity and by mortality the death rate that can be directly attributed to obesity. This chapter describes the epidemiologic studies that have helped to define the risks of obesity on morbidity and mortality (Table 1).
