The Endocrine System of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract

The movement of food through the gastrointestinal tract requires coordination with the processes of digestion and absorption. Integration is also achieved with energy balance, fat storage, appetite regulation, and memory. The gut is exposed to the exterior, and mucosal integrity must be maintained. In order to accomplish this, a complex control system has evolved. The complexities of this system have led to it being characterized as the little brain. This involves a specialized enteric nervous system and an enteroendocrine system, which are integrated with each other and have a bidirectional communication with the central nervous system. This integration may at least in part be the result of the evolution of a common pool of messenger peptides and receptors.
