Abstract
The auditory center of the midbrain is a phylogenetically ancient structure. In most vertebrates the embryology of the mesencephalon shows a common pattern that is less complex than for the other two vesicles that bud from the neural tube (prosencephalon and rhombencephalon) (Ariƫns Kappers et al., 1967).
