Abstract

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 20% of Americans will be 65 yr or older by the year 2050. Currently, those aged 85 yr or older are among the fastest growing segments of the population. The aging process affects multiple organ functions. With aging, changes in body composition, most notably a decrease in skeletal muscle mass and an increase in total body fat with greater visceral fat stores, are noted (1). These are just a few changes in physiology, metabolism, and function of the aged that result in altered nutritional requirements.
