Abstract

Hutchinson (1) first described angioma serpiginosum in 1889, under the term “a peculiar form of a serpiginous and infective nevoid disease.” He used the term “infective” to describe the pattern of progression of the disease, rather than to suggest an infectious etiology. Angioma serpiginosum is a neoplasm characterized by a proliferation of endothelial cells and formation of new capillaries and not simply a dilation of preexisting capillaries, as in telangiectases (2). Therefore, this lesion is included among the benign vascular neoplasms.
