Prevalence, Incidence, and Risk Factors for Dementia in Parkinson’s Disease

  • Chapter
Mental and Behavioral Dysfunction in Movement Disorders

Abstract

Dementia in patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) increases functional impairment both directly, through the limitations imposed by cognitive impairment, and indirectly, due to increased susceptibility to the psychiatric side effects of dopaminergic and anticholinergic therapy, leading to restricted medication use and increased motor impairment. Cognitive impairment in PD has been shown to affect quality of life (1) and contribute to caregiver distress (2), and has been associated with nursing home placement (3). The development of dementia is also associated with reduced survival in patients with PD (4).
