Abstract

Zygomycosis is an umbrella term describing acute (rarely chronic) and often fatal opportunistic infections occuring mainly in patients with specific predisposing conditions such as chronic debilitating disease (diabetes, hematologic malignancies, lymphoma), malnutrition, and immunosuppression (organ-transplant recipients, burns) (1–10), as well as in HIV-positive patients (11–13). Mucor infections have also been described in healthy individuals (14–17).
