Abstract

The genus Hansenula (Pichia) belongs to the class Ascomycetes, order Endomycetales, family Saccharomycetaceae. To date, only two species of this genus have been implicated in human disease: H. anomala and H. polymorpha (1–4). H. anomala (also synonymous with Pichia anomala [5,6]), by far the most common human pathogen of the two, is an ascosporogenous yeast that represents the perfect (sexual) stage of Candida pelliculosa.
