Abstract
Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of the skeleton, leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. It is the most prevalent bone disorder in industrialized countries and annually accounts for 1.5 million fractures in the U.S., incurring a total cost estimated at $13.8 billion in 1995 alone (1).
