Abstract

A widely used assay in studies of lipoxygenases (LOs) is the oxygénation of arachidonic acid, and, to date, mammalian enzymes that introduce oxygen at C-5, C-8, C-12, and C-15 of the arachidonic acid backbone have been described. Oxygénation of arachidonic acid is a physiological function, e.g., for 5-LO in leukotriene biosynthesis. However, it is possible that these enzymes also have other roles, one indication is the low activity of mouse epidermal 12-LO regarding oxygénation of free fatty acids (1).
