Abstract
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has yielded a copious amount of detailed information regarding the subcellular organization of plant cells. The morphological details of certain organelles just visible to the light microscopist were rendered apparent by TEM. In other instances, the enhanced magnification and resolving power revealed organelles not observed with conventional light microscopy. The subsequent coupling of TEM with biochemistry has resulted in a profound understanding of structure-function relationships providing for a rather thorough knowledge of how cellular organelles function.
