Abstract
This chapter briefly reviews the functional anatomy of the hypothalamohypophysial system, including the regulation of the major hypophysial hormones. The hypothalamohypophysial system is a major controller of integrated bodily functions, working alongside with other hormonal systems, as well as with the immune and the nervous systems. This system transmits brain signals to the various peripheral endocrine systems including the adrenals, gonads, and thyroid, which ultimately control gene expression in target tissues through peripheral hormones. Other pituitary cells transmit brain control using hormones acting on target cell surface receptors, such as prolactin, the growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) axis, or vasopressin (VP).
