Abstract
Numbering of carbon atoms in molecules should follow these rules:
-
1.
The number of C atoms in a molecule is designated with a subscript, thus C14 for a molecule containing 14 C atoms.
-
2.
The position of the C atom (usually in connection with a substituent on it) is designated with a subscript in parentheses, thus C(14) for the 14th carbon atom in a chain. Still, more frequently one finds designations of C atom positions using a hyphen, thus C-3, and the like.
