Abstract
The concept of myeloproliferative syndromes is used to describe the four major entities of chronic myelogenous leukemia, polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and osteomyelofibrosis, as well as some rarer syndromes. Common to all of these disorders is the autonomous proliferation of one or several hematopoietic cell lineages. The myeloproliferative disorders are malignant or clonal proliferation of myeloid stem cells, although the clinical presentation and course of these disorders is different. Often, several features of the myeloproliferative syndromes occur together (e.g., chronic myelogenous leukemia with osteomyelofibrosis or polycythemia with thrombocytosis).
