Abstract
Blood transfusions are an important part of the treatment of many malignant and nonmalignant hematologic disorders. Children with thalassemia, adults with myelodysplastic syndromes, and patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemias, leukemia, or aplastic anemias depend on blood transfusions. Modern treatment procedures like high-dose therapy and stem cell transplantation make an intensive support with blood products necessary. In this chapter, the serologic basis of blood transfusion, the blood products available, common and rare side effects of blood transfusions, and other considerations are discussed.
