Abstract
Age-related degenerative ocular and adnexal changes predispose the elderly to eye infections. The reduction in host defenses associated with age-related degenerative changes significantly compromises the capacity of eyes of elderly people to withstand prolonged exposure to microbial pathogens. Consequently, the elderly tend to have higher rates of eye infection and poorer treatment outcomes. The poorer treatment outcomes are, in part, due to delays in diagnosis as well as delays in presentation.
