Abstract

Many diseases of the skin involve the penis and surrounding skin, making it important for the dermatologist to include the genitals in a full skin exam. Table 1 lists many of these conditions. In contrast, very few diseases involve only the skin of the penis. Therefore, the patient who presents to a urologist with a cutaneous disease should be examined for evidence of other skin diseases. This examination often reveals a diagnosis that would have been difficult otherwise. History—especially sexual—also plays an important role. Although not covered in this chapter, sexually transmitted diseases are a feature of virtually every differential diagnosis. Other important factors include systemic disorders, immune status, allergies, symptoms, travel history, and symptoms of sexual and close contacts. All medications should be documented, including parenteral, topical, herbal, and over-the-counter preparations.
