Abstract

Occipital nerve block (ONB) allows blockade of nociceptive afferent fibers distributed over the occipital region, vertex, sides of the head, as well as upper cervical region, which is known to interact with the trigeminal complex. ONB may provide acute headache relief, abort an intractable headache cycle, or serve as part of prevention strategies for occipital neuralgia, migraine, cluster headaches, and other common headache disorders; ONB typically provides rapid pain relief, lasting days to weeks and months. ONB can be performed blindly or with ultrasound guidance. They are technically simple and well tolerated by patients and, if accurately performed, are remarkably safe.
