Abstract

Anticonvulsant medications with unique channel blocking and membrane stabilizing properties are effective in the treatment of neuropathic pain. Common side effects of anticonvulsant medications include dizziness and somnolence. The pain physician should be apprised of how to monitor and treat the unique and potentially fatal adverse effects associated with medications such as lamotrigine, oxcarbazepine , and carbamazepine . This chapter briefly summarizes the mechanism of action for anticonvulsant medications in the treatment of chronic pain.
