Abstract

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological disorders in childhood, usually underdiagnosed. In children this diagnosis is not even suspected since these children present with atypical symptoms and associated comorbid conditions. Pediatric specific diagnostic criteria have been recently published in order to more easily identify this disease. Genetics plays a very important role in the development of RLS, and in children with suspected RLS a very accurate family history could reveal RLS symptoms in the relatives. We provide a comprehensive review of this disorder from a pediatric perspective: basic pathophysiology, clinical features, early diagnosis and management are described.
