Abstract

Fatigue is a common complaint encountered by practitioners of sleep medicine. It is important for clinicians to be aware of the distinction between fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness, since the two symptoms, although they may occur together, have distinct etiologies, require different investigational approaches, and merit unique management strategies. This chapter briefly describes the nature of fatigue that occurs with various primary sleep, neurological and general medical disorders, provides a brief overview of the pathophysiology of central and peripheral fatigue, and discusses the latest recommendations for investigation and management of fatigue.
